Who are we and who do we want to be? In a world that is constantly challenging and sometimes defeating, imagining what is possible is the one essential tool for children in the developing world. Each year during March Break, OneWorld Schoolhouse Foundation hosts a book festival for students in St. Lucia and the Eastern Caribbean. They bring Canadian authors and illustrators down to meet over 8,000 students and celebrate the power of stories. Which is a pretty good story.

Fundraising for OneWorld Schoolhouse Foundation’s festivals and library development is the purpose of Find 52. Hundreds of St. Lucian students run relay segments of their nation. Meanwhile, in Ontario, schools also run their own events which supports their peers in the Eastern Caribbean. Putting yourself in someone else’s shoes is a good way to build empathy and develop ​“grit” – two qualities critical to learning at home and school.

Research shows fiction is indispensable to critical thinking and problem-solving. For children – especially those living below the poverty line – reading fiction offers a wider view of themselves and the future. OneWorld Schoolhouse Foundation is focussed on sustainable literacy-building in the Caribbean. To support new school libraries in St. Lucia, the foundation also organizes book drives – run by students throughout Ontario.
