Accessibility

Accessful is an initiative created by OSSTF and presented by Peel DSB to dramatically improve summers 2019 and 2020 employment opportunities for Gr 10 to 12 students with disabilities. Part of the mandate is to change the way disabilities are seen in Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon. Accessful is engaging students; educators; parents; employers; and social agencies – because everyone deserves to be accessful!

ReadableFest is a 2020 initiative programmed by OneWorld Schoolhouse Foundation in Simcoe County DSB. Through specially-selected stories, we created a festival to elevate awareness – and understanding of – accessibility. Authors like Eric Walters, Nan Forler and Shane Burcaw came into 15 elementary schools via Skype sessions and/​or four conferences. Engaging student audiences and their teachers paved the way for the development of meaningful school action plans. This, in turn, vitalized and sustained equitable learning environments in a way that was deeply relevant to the students themselves.

Too often, compliance training is rendered as a longwinded survey. Without context, content turns into a series of boxes to tick. Clique’s strategy was to support 120,000 teachers in Ontario and surround them with richer, more varied resources. Respecting our audience’s considerable teaching skills – and demands on their time – lifted the issue of accessibility far higher than a standard training module ever could.

A few years after launching The TeachAble Project for teachers, Clique squared the circle by working with student trustees. To promote accessibility as a human right, we produced Accessing Accessibility to amplify what’s at stake. By Any Measure shows every Ontarian what equity means to this socially engaged generation.
